Trophies won by Australia

Tuesday, October 6, 2009

Australia added one more title to their glitttering cricketing cupboard by winning the Champions Trophy in Centurion, South Africa, on Monday. It was Australia’s 33rd ODI Trophy, in which at least 3 teams participated. They had earlier won the Benson & Hedges, Carlton & United, and VB series played at home. With this victory, the Oz put all the other cricketing teams nations well behind them. India are second behind the Oz with 22 trophies to their credit, while Pakistan and Sri Lanka shared the 3rd place with 21 titles each. However, Australia had to wait for 16 years to officially gain this recognition, since the inception of ODIs. They won the World Cup in 1987-88 co-hosted by India and Pakistan and also some tri-series at home, but not a multinational involving more than 3 teams before that. Only West Indies (1975 and 1979) and Australia have won the World Cup back-to-back and now Australia is the only team to win ICC Champions Trophy in succession. They won it in India in 2006-07 and now in 2009-10 (in South Africa). The list of all teams and their trophies: Australia (33), India (22), Pakistan and Sri Lanka (21-21), West Indies (18), South Africa (12), England (9), New Zealand (6), Zimbabwe (4), Kenya and Netherlands (2 each), Bangladesh (1)
