Chris Gayle joins Desmond Haynes

West Indies captain Chris Gayle played a magnificent innings of 165 not out against Australia on Tuesday and now join the like of Desmond and Frank Worrell by carrying the bat through an innings. This was the only 6th instance when a West Indian opener remained not at the end of the test innings. Desmond Haynes has done it three times while Conrad Hunte and the great Worrell have done it once in their respective career. To fight till the end is very rare achievement for any opener and in this era of T20 and One Day Internationals carrying the bat throughout the innings is something like scoring triple hundred in an innings. Interestingly Frank Worrell stranded on 191 when all his partner were out against England at Trent Bridge in 1957 and missed out the Double hundred. Here is the list of the West Indies batsman carrying bat through a completed innings in test matches. 197* Frank Worrell Vs England, Trent Bridge, 1957 60* Conrad Hunte Vs Australia, Port of Spain, 1964-65 88* Desmond Haynes Vs Pakistan, Karachi, 1986-87 75* Desmond Haynes Vs England, The Oval, 1991 143* Desmond Haynes Vs Pakistan, Port of Spain, 1992-93 165* Chris Gayle Vs Australia, Adelaide, 2009-10
