Montevideo: A narrow 1-0 win in Uruguay helped Argentina to seal their place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. Honduras, Switzerland and Slovak

HAMBURG, Germany: Germany, already through to the 2010 World Cup, needed a last-gasp equaliser by striker Lukas Podolski to grab a 1-1 draw with eliminated Finland in their final qualifier on Wednesday.

Germany, who beat second-placed Russia 1-0 on Saturday to seal top spot in Group Four, went behind after 11 minutes.

The hosts failed to clear a header by Roman Eremenko and the ball landed at the feet of Jonathan Johansson, who netted on his 100th international appearance.

Having made six changes to the line-up which beat Russia, Germany looked uninspired, failing to create a single scoring chance in the first half.

Lacking stability in their backline and clinical finishing in attack despite playing with three strikers, the Germans were facing what looked like their first defeat by Finland in 86 years.

Finnish striker Jari Litmanen put the ball into the net early in the second half but his effort was ruled off side.

The Germans gradually upped the tempo and the arrivals on the pitch of midfielder Mesut Ozil and striker Miroslav Klose added much-needed pace.

With fans jeering throughout the second half, it was Ozil who lifted the ball into the box, the Finnish defence scrambled to clear and Klose found Podolski to slot home with seconds left.

Montevideo: A narrow 1-0 win in Uruguay helped Argentina to seal their place at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Honduras, Switzerland and Slovakia also earned spots in the 32-nation field.

Mario Bolatti scored in the 84th minute to help Maradona's boys to grab the final automatic berth for next year's tournament.

Brazil (9-2-7) finished first in South America with 34 points, one ahead of Chile and Paraguay (10-5-3), which had earlier clinched the first three berths from South America.

Argentina (8-6-4), who would have missed their first World Cup since 1970 if they had lost, wound up fourth with 28 points and will go to the tournament for the 10th straight time.

"Thanks to my players, today I was consecrated as a coach," Argentina's Diego Maradona said defiantly during post-match remarks laced with profanities. "We are in the World Cup with full honors."

'Giving Becks man of the match award like giving Obama the Nobel'

London: A bewildered England coach Fabio Capello said that the naming of sub David Beckham as England's Man of the Match against Belarus despite playing for just 31 minutes had left him completely flummoxed.

"Yes, I was surprised by that one. I just thought it was like Barack Obama getting the Nobel Peace Prize after eight months as USA President," The Sun quoted Capello, as saying.

Beckham was nominated by former Manchester United teammate Steve Bruce, who was analysing the match for ITV.

England boss Fabio Capello grills Rio Ferdinand twice

The LA Galaxy superstar admitted: "I don't know how I got that one. Thanks Brucie. I played with him, of course."

Sunderland boss Bruce insisted: "For me, David had the biggest impact on the game even though he was only on for 30 minutes. He is desperate to get on that plane to South Africa and tonight he lifted the whole occasion. You can't deny his range of passing and it's great for him that he can still play balls like he did out there tonight."

Beckham, 34, has now won 115 England caps and is near to completing another loan move to AC Milan to keep himself in the World Cup frame.

FIFA World Cup History

Tuesday, October 13, 2009

207 teams have competed to qualiy for the FIFA World Cup Finals, 78 of them qualified at least once, 11 out of these made it to final match, and only seven has won, Brazil alone crowned with five victories. This is the glimpse of FIFA World Cup.

Jules Rimbet, the third president of FIFA, in the 1920s, led a group of visionary French football administrators to bring the world’s strongest national football teams together to compete for the title of World Champions. This gave birth to the first ever FIFA World Cup. It was organized in Uruguay in 1930 and to continue it once in every four years.

Three World Cups were held in the 1930s. The 1942 and 1946 World Cups could not make its presence due to World War II. However, the tournament resumed in 1950.

The earlier FIFA World Cups were held in the Americas and Europe alternatively. After 1998, there was a change in the system. Now the host country is chosen in a vote by FIFA’s executive committee. It is done under a single transferable vote system and is made six years in advance of the tournament.

Football Rankings

Since August 1993, FIFA has started ranking international teams in order to publish comparisons of their relative strengths at regular intervals. Initially one point was given for a draw and three for victory. This system of ranking was very simple and was far from the original objective. FIFA realized that more factors affect the result and to make the ranking more comprehensive, it made the following few changes:
  • Scaling up the point ranking by a factor of ten.
  • Changing the calculation to take into account:
  • Number of goals
  • Home or away match
  • Importance of Match/Competition
  • Regional strength
  • Not having fixed points for a victory or a draw.
  • Allowing the match losers to earn points.
Previously the evolution period was eight years, but after World Cup 2006, it will be cut down to four years.

Football Introduction

Advancing the ball with kicks, running with it, passing to other team mates, trying to forward it to the opponent’s end of the field, shooting in between the goal posts and scoring a point, this is football. The winning team is the one that has scored more number of points (goals) when a specified length of time has elapsed.

The origin of the game ‘Football’ predates the recorded history. Documented evidence, a manual of Chinese military during the Han Dynasty in about 2nd century BC, describes an organized activity resembling football. It was known as ‘Cuju’ (Tsu Chu), which involved kicking a leather ball through a hole in a piece of silk cloth strung between two 30 foot poles.

The game was re-invented, after over a thousand years by the English. But the name ‘Football’ was used by number of different related team sports, such as Rugby football, American football, Australian rules football, Gelic football and Canadian football. Association football goes by the name ‘Soccer.’ However, many believe that Walter Camp adapted rugby into the sport of football. He contributed many changes from Rugby and Soccer to American football. Few of them are given below:

  • One side retained undisputed possession of the ball, until that side gives up the ball as a result of its own violations.
  • The line of scrimmage.
  • 11 on a team instead of 15.
  • Created the quarter-back and center positions.
  • Forward pass.
  • Standardized the scoring system, numerical scoring.
  • Created the safety, interference, penalties, and the neutral zone.
  • Tackling as low as the knee was permitted - 1888.
  • A touchdown increased in value to six points and field goals went down to three points - 1912.
  • Today, the laws of football are determined by the International Football Association Board (IFAB) that was formed in 1886. Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the international organising body for football adhere to the rules laid down by the IFAB and it organises the most prestigious international football competition, FIFA World Cup, most widely-viewed sporting event in the world
